HOW to MAKE YOUR OWN RSO OIL

Making Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) at home can be a complex and somewhat dangerous process if done improperly, as it involves solvents and high temperatures. However, if you follow safety precautions carefully, it can be done at home. Here’s an outline of the general process for making RSO oil:

What You’ll Need:

  • Cannabis(Indica is often preferred due to its higher THC content)
  • Solvent(Typically, high-proof alcohol like Everclear or isopropyl alcohol, though ethanol is safest)
  • Large glass jar
  • Strainer or cheesecloth
  • Large glass dish or pan(for evaporating the solvent)
  • Double boiler or rice cooker(for decarbing the oil)
  • Syringe or container(for storing the oil)

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Decarboxylate Your Cannabis (Activating the THC):

Decarbing is an important step in activating the cannabinoids (like THC) in your cannabis.

  • Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C).
  • Break up your cannabis into small pieces (not grind it, as fine grinding can make it hard to strain).
  • Spread the cannabis evenly on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, checking every 10 minutes to avoid over-baking.

2. Extracting the Cannabinoids (The Solvent Wash):

  • Once your cannabis is decarbed, place it into a large glass jar.
  • Pour enough high-proof alcohol (e.g., Everclear) to fully cover the cannabis (about 1-2 liters, depending on the amount).
  • Stir the mixture for 3-5 minutes to mix the solvent with the plant material.
  • Strain the mixture using cheesecloth or a fine strainer into another clean glass container.
  • Repeat this process with more alcohol (second wash) to get the most out of the plant material.
  • Discard the leftover cannabis material.

3. Evaporating the Solvent:

This step must be done carefully since the solvent is highly flammable.

  • Pour the alcohol-cannabis mixture into a large glass pan or dish.
  • Allow the alcohol to evaporate at room temperature, or use a double boiler or rice cooker to gently heat the mixture to speed up evaporation. Do NOT use an open flame. A well-ventilated area or an air purifier is important to avoid inhaling fumes.
  • Stir occasionally. As the alcohol evaporates, you’ll see the oil begin to form at the bottom.
  • Continue until all the alcohol is evaporated. You may have a sticky, dark oil remaining.

4. Finishing the Oil:

Once the solvent has completely evaporated, you should have a thick, dark, and potent oil. You may want to scrape it out of the pan or dish and place it into a syringe for easier dosing.

5. Storage:

Store your RSO oil in a cool, dark place (refrigerator or a cool cabinet). The oil will last for several months.

Safety Tips:

  • Ventilation:Always work in a well-ventilated area because the alcohol fumes can be harmful and flammable.
  • Flame-Free Zone:Never use open flames or heat sources like a gas stove to evaporate alcohol.
  • Safety Gear:Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling solvents.
